What Our Students Say
Real reviews from workers and employers across the country.
"I just finished the online 40-hour training. It was really convenient to do it from home when I could squeeze in a few hours here and there instead of sitting in a classroom for 8 hours a day. It was great training and you guys saved me a lot of money too. Thanks!"
"I have taken a few courses through your site and I like your format much better than other websites. The audio, slides and video kept the training interesting, which helped me learn the information. The quizzes helped me remember the important info."
"Thank you for such an informative HAZMAT class! I didn't have a lot of expectations from an online course, but I was surprised that I learned more in your online course than I did in classroom courses I have taken. Great class!"
"This is my second year taking hazwoper training courses through your website. The information was detailed and thorough and up to date. It's clear that you care about providing high quality training. Thanks for offering such a great service!"
The Most Common HAZWOPER & Safety Training Questions — Answered
These are the questions workers, employers, and safety managers search for every day. We answer them directly — no fluff.
HAZWOPER stands for Hazardous Waste Operations and Emergency Response. It is an OSHA standard (29 CFR 1910.120 for general industry, 29 CFR 1926.65 for construction) that requires training for workers involved in hazardous waste operations and emergency response. Workers who need HAZWOPER training include those at hazardous waste cleanup sites, Superfund/CERCLA sites, TSD (Treatment, Storage, and Disposal) facilities, and emergency responders to hazmat incidents. The amount of training required — 40 hours, 24 hours, or 8 hours — depends on the worker's role and level of exposure. Learn more at WhatIsHAZWOPER.com →
The 40-Hour HAZWOPER course is required for workers who are regularly exposed to hazardous waste — those doing actual cleanup, remediation, sampling, or other hands-on work at hazardous waste sites. The 24-Hour HAZWOPER is for workers who occasionally visit hazardous waste sites but don't perform hands-on waste operations — such as project managers, inspectors, site monitors, and support staff who may enter the exclusion zone but don't work directly with waste. When in doubt, check with your employer or safety officer — choosing the wrong course can put you out of compliance.
OSHA requires an 8-Hour Annual Refresher every 12 months for any worker who continues HAZWOPER operations. This requirement is found in 29 CFR 1910.120(e)(8). There is no grace period — if your refresher lapses, your employer is required to remove you from HAZWOPER site activities until you complete it. The 8-Hour Annual Refresher takes one day online and costs $39.95.
Your initial HAZWOPER certificate (40-Hour or 24-Hour) does not have a printed expiration date. However, your status as a current HAZWOPER-certified worker expires if you miss your annual 8-Hour Refresher. OSHA 29 CFR 1910.120(e)(8) requires the refresher every 12 months — without it, you are not considered current and cannot legally perform HAZWOPER work. Most employers track refresher due dates and will pull workers from site if they lapse.
Yes. OSHA permits online and computer-based training to fulfill the knowledge component of HAZWOPER training. OSHA's standard focuses on whether the training content meets the regulatory requirements of 29 CFR 1910.120 — not on the delivery method. HazMat Student has provided OSHA-compliant online HAZWOPER training since 2007, and our certificates are accepted by environmental contractors, government agencies, industrial facilities, and emergency response organizations in all 50 states. Some site-specific employers also require hands-on skills verification — always confirm with your employer before enrolling.
Online HAZWOPER courses are self-paced with up to 12 months to complete. Typical completion times are: 40-Hour HAZWOPER — 1 to 2 weeks (most students complete in 8–14 days working a few hours per day); 24-Hour HAZWOPER — 3 to 5 days; 8-Hour Annual Refresher — 1 day. You can log in and out anytime — the system saves your progress automatically and resumes where you left off.
HazMat Student pricing: 40-Hour HAZWOPER — $210; 24-Hour HAZWOPER — $150; 8-Hour Annual Refresher — $39.95; 8-Hour Supervisor Training — $53.57. Corporate volume pricing is available for employers training multiple workers. All courses include full training content, student manual, quizzes, and an instant downloadable certificate upon passing. There are no hidden fees or subscription charges.
Upon passing the final exam you can immediately download a completion certificate from the training system. The certificate displays your name, course title, completion date, and course hours. It is accepted by employers, site superintendents, and regulatory agencies as documentation of your HAZWOPER training per 29 CFR 1910.120. Most courses also offer an optional wallet-sized ID card. There is no separate "OSHA certification" — OSHA does not issue certificates directly; the certificate from the training provider is your documentation.
Yes. All HazMat Student online courses are mobile device ready and work on smartphones and tablets. You can start a course on your computer and continue on your phone — your progress is saved automatically. The courses include full audio narration, so headphones are recommended on mobile.
It depends on the type of landfill and your role. Municipal solid waste (MSW) landfills that accept only household waste generally do not fall under HAZWOPER. However, landfills that accept hazardous waste, mixed waste streams, or have on-site contamination issues likely require HAZWOPER training for workers. Many landfill employers require the 40-Hour HAZWOPER for site workers as a best practice even when not strictly required. Check your employment agreement or ask your safety manager. When in doubt, call us at 1-888-342-9628.
OSHA 29 CFR 1910.120(e)(4) requires supervisors and managers at HAZWOPER sites to receive training equivalent to the workers they supervise, plus additional supervisor-specific training covering supervisory responsibilities. Most supervisors hold a 40-Hour HAZWOPER certification and complete the additional 8-Hour Supervisor Training ($53.57). Supervisors must also complete the annual 8-Hour Refresher like all other HAZWOPER workers.
Any "hazmat employee" as defined by the Department of Transportation under 49 CFR Part 172 must receive hazmat training. This includes anyone who loads, unloads, handles, offers for transportation, prepares shipping papers, marks, labels, or placards hazardous materials for commercial transport — even if they do so infrequently. DOT hazmat training must be completed within 90 days of hire and refreshed every 3 years. View DOT Hazmat courses.
HAZWOPER (OSHA 29 CFR 1910.120) covers workers who perform hazardous waste operations or respond to hazmat emergencies. It focuses on worker safety at contaminated sites. DOT Hazmat training (49 CFR Part 172) covers employees who prepare, handle, or transport hazardous materials in commerce. Some workers in industries like environmental services or chemical manufacturing need both. They are separate regulatory requirements under different agencies (OSHA vs. DOT) and are not interchangeable.
Yes. HazMat Student offers fully translated Spanish HAZWOPER courses including the 40-Hour HAZWOPER en Español ($210), 24-Hour HAZWOPER en Español ($150), 8-Hour Refresher en Español ($39.95), and Supervisor Refresher in Spanish. All Spanish courses include full text, audio narration, and video content in Spanish. Certificates are issued in English as required by OSHA. Ver todos los cursos en español →
Yes. HazMat Student offers corporate accounts for employers training 5 to 500+ workers. Corporate accounts include volume pricing discounts, invoice and ACH billing, completion tracking, and dedicated customer support. Yes, when construction work takes place at or near hazardous waste sites. OSHA 29 CFR 1926.65 is the construction-specific HAZWOPER standard and mirrors the general industry requirements in 1910.120. Construction workers doing excavation, remediation, demolition, or other operations at contaminated sites — including brownfields, Superfund sites, or properties with underground storage tanks — typically require 40-Hour HAZWOPER training. The same online courses that satisfy 1910.120 also satisfy 1926.65.
HazMat Student has been providing online HAZWOPER and safety training since 2007 — one of the longest-operating online safety training providers in the country. With 67,000+ courses completed, all 50 states served, full audio and video content, instant certificates, and Spanish course options, HazMat Student is trusted by individual workers, environmental contractors, government agencies, and Fortune 500 companies. Our money-back guarantee means there's no risk to try. Compare HAZWOPER courses →
Most environmental consultants who conduct site assessments, Phase II investigations, soil or groundwater sampling, or remediation oversight at contaminated properties need HAZWOPER training. Full-time site workers performing hands-on remediation typically need the 40-Hour course. Environmental consultants who visit sites for brief periods of assessment work but don't work directly with waste may qualify for the 24-Hour course. Consult with your project manager or safety officer to confirm which level your firm requires.

HAZWOPER training is required by OSHA 29 CFR 1910.120 (general industry) and 29 CFR 1926.65 (construction). The standard was developed under the Superfund Amendments and Reauthorization Act (SARA) of 1986 and applies to five categories of operations including hazardous waste cleanup, TSD facilities, and emergency response. The training requirements are detailed in paragraph (e) (initial training), paragraph (e)(8) (annual refresher), and paragraph (q) (emergency response) of the standard.
Yes. Your HAZWOPER certificate belongs to you as a worker, not to your employer. If you change jobs, your current HAZWOPER certification transfers with you as long as it remains current (i.e., you've completed your annual 8-Hour Refresher on time). A new employer may require documentation — your certificate printout is sufficient. Some employers also require site-specific or employer-specific orientation training in addition to your HAZWOPER certificate.
EMS workers who respond to hazmat incidents need training under OSHA 29 CFR 1910.120(q), the Emergency Response portion of HAZWOPER. The specific level required depends on their response role: First Responder Awareness (FRA) Level I — for those who discover and notify; First Responder Operations (FRO) Level II — for defensive operations; Hazmat Technician — for offensive operations that attempt to stop a release. HazMat Student offers all three online. Many EMS providers also complete the full 40-Hour HAZWOPER for comprehensive coverage. View EMS hazmat courses →
